VGHF Releases Colin Williamson Photo Archive Of 1990s And 2000s Japan Game Culture

The Video Game History Foundation published the Colin Williamson Photography Collection on its digital archive on October 21, 2026. More than 300 photos are free to view, most taken in Japan between 1999 and 2005. They cover Tokyo Game Show 1999 and 2000, Nintendo Space World 2000, the Amusement Machine Show, and Akihabara game shops and arcades.

The collection includes photos of the Shenmue exhibit at Tokyo Game Show, where televisions played game footage around a forklift and wooden crates. At Nintendo Space World 2000, the photos show the venue under large Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color signs, an event where the Game Boy Advance was among the hardware shown.

Williamson was an American game journalist based mainly in Japan, reporting from there starting in 1999. The Akihabara photos record posters and POP displays for titles such as FINAL FANTASY IX and Jet Set Radio. No research affiliation is required to use the archive, and republication for research and education is allowed with credit to Williamson and VGHF.
