Witch On The Holy Night Film Opens In U.S. And Canada On January 29, 2027

Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will screen the Witch on the Holy Night anime film in U.S. and Canadian theaters on January 29, 2027, in Japanese with English subtitles and with an English dub. The film, produced by ufotable, opens in Japan on November 20, 2026, with the visual novel's smartphone version launching the same day. International dates run from January 21 in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates through February 5 in Spain and Kazakhstan, covering Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Central America, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand, the U.K., Ireland, Finland, Poland, Sweden, and India. The returning cast is Haruka Tomatsu as Aoko Aozaki, Kana Hanazawa as Alice Kuonji, and Yusuke Kobayashi as Soujyuro Sizuki. The original visual novel is set in the late 1980s and follows Aoko, heir to a family of modern mages.

Aniplex released the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions in the West in December 2022, the same day as the Japanese release, and those versions have sold more than 150,000 copies worldwide. A Steam release followed in December 2023.

The film has wider production credits behind it than the trailer alone suggests. The visual novel's character designs are by Hirokazu Koyama, who also drew the graphics for the 2012 release, and its soundtrack is by Hideyuki Fukasawa. ufotable, the studio behind Demon Slayer and Fate/Zero, is producing the adaptation.

Aoko's family line and her sister's claim on it drive the source story. Aoko is one of two sister heirs to a long line of modern mages, disinterested in magic until she is declared heir and begins an apprenticeship under Alice Kuonji, a young witch living in a manor on a hill. She balances that training with her duties as student council president and with Soujyuro Sizuki, a transfer student unfamiliar with the modern world, while contending with the plots of her older sister Touko, who feels her birthright was denied.

Mahoutsukai no Yoru started in the mid-90s as one of the first collaborations between writer Kinoko Nasu and artist Takashi Takeuchi, before they founded Type-Moon. It began as a novel shown only to friends, became a visual novel with Koyama's graphics in April 2012, and was planned with two sequels.
