Maze Theory released a gameplay trailer for its VR survival adventure game Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars at gamescom 2026. The game is based on Andy Weir's novel and the summer 2026 Amazon MGM Studios film starring Ryan Gosling, but features an original story written by Weir that covers an untold part of the Hail Mary mission. Players take on the role of protagonist Ryland Grace in the cockpit of the spacecraft, where they can interact with objects and operate controls with high physics accuracy. The trailer highlights the alien Rocky, who communicates through a musical language and broken machine translation, and reacts expressively to player actions. The demo lasted under five minutes and included comedic moments, but the full game reportedly includes tense survival elements beyond a simple space walk. The release date is undecided, but the game is planned for Meta Quest, PICO, and Android XR platforms, with a scheduled launch in late 2026. Wishlisting is available on the Meta store page.

The sci-fi film 'Project Hail Mary', based on Andy Weir's best-selling novel and starring Ryan Gosling, began streaming exclusively on Prime Video on July 3. The film follows Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of his identity or mission, and gradually uncovers his task to prevent Earth's destruction by solving the mystery of the fading sun. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who won an Academy Award for 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse', the screenplay was written by Drew Goddard, nominated for an Oscar for 'The Martian'. Gosling, who also served as a producer, was the primary advocate for the adaptation, having read the manuscript before publication and urged the studio to hire Lord and Miller. The film was released in theaters on March 20 and became available for rental or purchase on Prime Video on May 13. It earned approximately $141 million worldwide in its opening weekend, the biggest opening for a Hollywood film released in 2026 at that time, and its global box office has exceeded 110 billion yen.
