The game is the sequel to Pony Island, created by Daniel Mullins, the developer known for the acclaimed indie title Inscryption. The previous Pony Island holds an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam, with 95% of approximately 14,700 all-time user reviews being positive. In Pony Island 2: Panda Circus, the player takes on the role of a young wanderer obsessed with world conquest who dies and becomes trapped in hell, facing off against gods through video games and staking their soul. The game features diverse gameplay, including 3D first-person action, retro-style 2D side-scrolling action, word puzzles, RPGs, and point-and-click adventure segments. Real-life influencers appear in the game as the gods who confront the player, with live-action footage integrated into the experience. The developer describes the game as a journey like a phantom show.
