Earth Defense Force 5 launched for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 8, 2026, with two paid mission packs planned through December. The port runs alongside Earth Defense Force 6's release on the same hardware, set for January 28, 2027.
D3 Publisher brought Earth Defense Force 5 to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 8, 2026, priced at 3,980 yen for the standard package and download versions, 4,980 yen for the Deluxe Edition, and 6,480 yen for the D3P WEB SHOP Limited Pack. The port by developer Sandlot keeps the 2017 game's premise: the player joins the EDF and fights an alien invasion that arrives without warning, clearing missions by wiping out every enemy or destroying a target across four classes (Ranger, Wing Diver, Air Raider, Fencer).
The Switch 2 build unifies its basic systems and UI with Earth Defense Force 6, the sequel set for January 28, 2027. Local wireless play and two-player split-screen co-op are included, and gyro controls are new for handheld mode, adjustable from the options menu. Button layouts are configurable per class, and gyro works on the Switch 2 Pro Controller. The port launched with a pre-order period that opened August 27 and a second trailer; a trial play corner was planned at Tokyo Game Show 2026. A D3P WEB SHOP store bonus adds the Digiboku EDF Decoy weapon, usable by Ranger and Air Raider, which projects digital EDF soldiers to protect the player, the announcement of that bonus tied to the Digiboku EDF spinoff.
Two additional mission packs are planned after release: Extra Challenge on November 12 and Super Challenge on December 10, each 500 yen, with the first carrying 10 or more missions and 35 or more weapons. The port landed in a crowded release week that also included Gears of War: E-Day, Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, and KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I-III].
